Annie Huang - Story Pitch

  1. While on a hike, a man finds an ancient shrine in a forest and his curiosity encourages him to donate a sacrifice. He kills a rabbit and puts it on the shrine, which spawns an ancient deity. The deity awards him for his devotion by turning him into a minor god, blessed with immortality.
  2. The man wants to share his blessing with others, so using his new powers, he grants immortality to his friends as well, and they in turn share it with others; thus creating a ripple effect where eventually, everyone in the world is immortal. All is well and happy for a few years.
  3. However, after about three years, the world begins to overcrowd; lives are still beginning but no lives are ending. People begin fighting each other for food and other resources, resulting in massive wars between humankind. No one dies in these wars, of course, but many are being tortured.
  4. The man, realizing that he has made a devastating mistake, struggles to make a decision but eventually reverses the gift of immortality from all humans and watches his friends die, as they had lived past their death date.
  5. He comes to terms with the fact that immortality is not a blessing, but a curse. He now understands that the deity who granted him immortality was an evil deity, and now he will have to suffer for all of eternity, forever outliving the people he will meet and will love. He decides to take on responsibility as the God of Death, ensuring that no one else will suffer like he does.
